The Railway Station Indexes list railway stations currently serviced by regular passenger trains in Australia. Tram and light rail stops are not included. Most distances shown in the indexes refer to the distance by rail from the main terminus in the capital city of the state where the station is located, as indicated below:

  • Distances in New South Wales are from Sydney’s Central station, except for stations on the isolated Skitube Alpine Railway line, which are from Bullocks Flat.

  • The distance for Canberra is from Sydney’s Central station.

  • Distances in Victoria are from Melbourne’s Southern Cross station.

  • Distances in Queensland are from Brisbane’s Roma Street station, except for stations on the isolated Normanton–Croydon line, which are measured from Normanton.

  • Distances in Western Australia are from Perth station, except for stations on the Kalgoorlie standard gauge line and the Adelaide–Perth standard gauge line, which are from East Perth Terminal station.

  • Distances in South Australia are from Adelaide station, except for stations on the Adelaide–Melbourne standard gauge line and the Adelaide–Perth standard gauge line, which are from Adelaide Parklands Terminal station.

  • Distances in the Northern Territory are from Adelaide Parklands Terminal station.

Where more than one route is possible to a particular station, the distance indicated typically refers to the route via the first line built. Distances are marked on infrastructure on the ground in many locations, usually providing the distance from the locations indicated above, although some marked distances are measured from other locations. Distances via alternative routes can be calculated using the following figures:
