The 22 Class units first entered service as members of the 422 Class in New South Wales in 1969. Fourteen members of the 422 Class were refurbished by Downer EDI at Port Augusta in South Australia and reclassified as the 22 Class, re-entering service from 2001. Five of these were again reclassified as the DC Class.
