Trams and Light Rail Vehicles

E Class tram 6045, corner of Spencer and La Trobe Streets, Melbourne, 19 December 2017.

Trams have been used in Australian cities since the 1800s; Light Rail Vehicles are essentially a modern form of tram. Light Rail Vehicles operate with coupled modules, while trams mostly operate as separate vehicles.

Melbourne has by far the largest tram fleet in Australia, with numerous tram types servicing its extensive network. Tram services in Melbourne are operated by Yarra Trams, and trams in Adelaide are operated by Torrens Connect. The light rail network in Sydney is operated by Sydney Light Rail, and the Gold Coast light rail line is operated by GoldLinQ.
