The 5020 class are a further development of the earlier 5000 Class, but have increased power. Manufacturer United Group Rail was re-branded UGL in 2009. While most UGL locomotives are manufactured at Broadmeadow (near Newcastle), some of the 5020 Class were built at Chullora in Sydney. Their heavy weight means that their service is restricted to the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, where they are deployed hauling coal trains. Their arrival brought a considerable expansion of the QR National (now Aurizon) Hunter Valley fleet.
