Eleven members of the former Victorian Railways B Class were rebuilt as the A Class in 1984 and 1985 for passenger service. Most of the A Class units were later used in freight operations, although some remained dedicated to passenger train work. A66 is the only unit now operational, hauling passenger trains in Victoria.
