These units were originally members of the Commonwealth Railways CL Class before being rebuilt for passenger service and reclassified as the CLP Class. They are similar to the CLF class, but have a higher maximum speed and other modifications suitable for passenger train work. Nevertheless, they have also been used extensively in freight service.
