Four members of the DL Class entered service, with the final two units commencing operations in 1961, 22 years after class leader DL1, which had been the first diesel locomotive to enter service with a government railway in Australia. They were initially deployed for service on light lines in Far North Queensland and were later used in shunting work. DL4 is based at Normanton, where it is on standby for service on the Gulflander.
