The Eastern Suburbs line extends to the eastern suburbs of Sydney and is mostly underground, with the exception of two viaducts and another short section. It was opened in 1979 but was first proposed many decades earlier. Extensions to other eastern suburbs were planned but never eventuated. The line is double track throughout. It operates as an extension of the Illawarra line, and the lines are combined in timetables. Almost all trains terminate at Bondi Junction, but a small number terminate at Martin Place during peak hour.
