FL220 entered service with the Department of Railways in New South Wales in 1970 as 422 Class member 42220. During 1980 it was rebuilt by Clyde Engineering with Super Series wheelslip control technology and a range of other modifications. It was sold to CFCL Australia (now Rail First Asset Management) in 2001 and was renumbered FL220. Watco Australia purchased it in 2016 for use in Western Australia.
