The 25 units of the N Class entered service with V/Line in Victoria from 1986 to 1987. They were introduced for hauling long-distance passenger trains, although they have been used for freight services on occasions. While members of the class remain operational with V/Line on standard gauge and broad gauge tracks, some are now stored.
