The Northern via Strathfield line extends to the northern suburbs of Sydney. Services operate from the city via Strathfield, with most trains terminating at Hornsby, while some peak services terminate at Epping. The line is mostly double track for suburban trains, although between North Strathfield and Rhodes there are three tracks in use for suburban trains, and between West Ryde and Epping there are four tracks. Between Epping and Thornleigh a dedicated freight line is located on the western side of the line. Through the Central Business District trains servicing the Northern line operate underground between Central and Wynyard, and cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge between Wynyard and Milsons Point. Trains to the Central Coast and Newcastle also use the Northern via Strathfield line.
