The PN Class are similar to the Queensland 4000 Class units built around the same time. They are fitted with Automatic Train Protection, which incorporates a number of safety features, including signal updates and the calculation of braking distances. The PN Class units are used for intermodal freight service on the Queensland North Coast line between Brisbane and Cairns.
