Originally in service with Union Pacific in the United States, the first nine units of the SD90MAC-H Phase II Class were purchased by Fortescue Metals Group in 2011. Their original EMD 265 engines were not successful and they were re-engined with less powerful EMD 710G3B engines. A further eight units that had also operated with Union Pacific were obtained by Fortescue Metals Group and arrived in Western Australia in 2014. These units are now stored; it was expected that they would be re-engined with 710 series engines like units 901–909, but this has not occurred.
