These units commenced service as Queensland Rail 2170 Class locomotives in 1983, and were obtained for service on Queensland’s Goonyella system. They were similar to earlier 2100 Series locomotives. Although sold by Queensland Railways for service in South Africa, three were later purchased by Watco and returned to Australia, being renumbered as the WRC Class.
